Eric LeGrand was a member of Rutgers University’s football team and was on a clear path to a promising career in the NFL (National Football League-American).Tragedy struck when he was paralyzed whilst making a tackle in a game in October 2010 at the age of 20 years old. Eric LeGrand’s injury robbed him of movement from the waist down, and he was to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. The professional American football franchise “Tampa Bay Buccaneers” signed LeGrand to an honorary position on their team. They didn’t have to do what they did. But what they did do epitomises why sport is such a special endeavor. Even though he could no longer play football, he still had a role to play!
On March 13, 2017, professional wrestling and media company WWE announced that LeGrand would receive the Warrior Award at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony on March 31, 2017. Since its introduction in 2015, the Warrior Award is given to “an individual who has exhibited unwavering strength and perseverance, and who lives life with the courage and compassion that embodies the indomitable spirit of Ultimate Warrior”.
